Built anatomically correct
The Wake Gill is a 7-inch bluegill profile, anatomically correct for bluegill spawning in the summer - exactly the bream-bed-eater window it's built for. It carries a genuinely subtle action for a two-piece bait, and it's noticeably thinner than most wake baits in this category, for a specific reason: bluegill have a slender profile, and watched from behind, they carry most of their swimming power high in the body near the tail, with the bottom acting more like a rudder. We wanted that same power distribution built into the bait itself, so when a fish feels it coming through the water in its lateral line, it reads like an actual bluegill rather than a generic wake bait silhouette.
Fixing the hookup-ratio problem
A common issue with bluegill-style wake baits is overbuilt fins that get in the way - and the hookup ratio suffers because of it. On the Wake Gill, the hooks sit in the right position so they don't hang on each other or on the bill, which is a common failure point on wake baits in general. It also runs a wide bill, so it comes over cover cleanly.
Three retrieves it's built to do
Burn. Reel it fast and it stays locked on top without blowing out.
Crawl. A nice, easy, slow wind that leaves a clean V on the surface, tail working steadily back and forth, leading with the head.
Walk. Pitch it out and twitch-twitch-twitch it like you're walking a frog - a lot of belly roll, tail throwing water hard, and the bait essentially walks in place, looking exactly like a wounded bluegill on top.
The most productive approach is usually a mix of all three in one retrieve - twitch at the surface, slow it down, burn a stretch, stop, twitch again. It's a genuinely versatile wake bait, and a lot of fun to fish.
